July 2021’s Movie Watch List with Juicy Stats

Oof. This is one late post. I usually get these on the site close to the beginning of the month and we are already… 20 days into August?!!?

Well, that is life for me. One month I’m on vacation, relaxing, posting every day. The next is so busy I can’t find the time. Well, I got a long and lazy Friday shift ahead of me today, so… better late than never!

June 2021’s Movie Watch List with Juicy Stats

2021 is already halfway gone. Time flies.

My good-movie average is a little low this month since I intentionally watched some bad films. Two of the Tremors sequels and 8 Heads in a Duffle Bag. Then I saw The Dukes of Hazzard was leaving Tubi at the end of the month. I should have left it unwatched! Still, no strikeouts as I watched all I started to completion.

May 2021’s Movie Watch List with Juicy Stats

May was a little closer to my usual with a total of 28 films watched. 23 were seen by me for the first time. While the stat got a little boost with Shake! Otis at Monterey only being 19 minutes long, Zack Snyder’s Justice League balanced it out with its whopping 342 minute runtime.

I decided to add a links on “My Ratings” scores to my brief reviews on Letterboxd for those who might want a little more. I have shied away from doing this in the past thinking that it would take too long, but little effort was needed. Let me know if you like this feature or not. Full reviews on the blog here are still linked in the title.

An excellent month quality wise with a solid average and ZERO strikeouts!

April 2021’s Movie Watch List with Juicy Stats

Well, April was a really slow month for movies. This is mostly due to me getting sick (besides the odd allergy symptom) for the first time since this pandemic started. Last Monday I got my first shot of the Covid-19 vaccine and its side effects put me out of commission for almost a week. I couldn’t even move on Tuesday without major effort. But, I’m all good now and the experience was still way better than getting Covid!

Anyway, I only managed to get 23 films in me, 17 of which I had not seen before. BUT… I enjoyed most of them! I got to see some great films with Sarah as we wrapped up our march towards The Oscars. There were only two stinkers out of the lot and I even managed to cross a movie off of the ol’ bucket list. Not bad for an “off” month!

March 2021’s Movie Watch List with Juicy Stats

2021 continues to move a light speed for me. Here we are in April already! As for March, the Oscar nominees were announced making it heavy on the contemporary dramas. As I’ve said in the past, I enjoy the nomination process since it puts plenty of great films on my radar that I would not have watched otherwise. As for what wins, it is a total crap shoot!

Which of the noms did I like? Great question! A lot of homeruns this month! The answers are below…

But I gotta say, Radha Blank in The 40 Year Old Version is probably set to win some awards.

Bonus Coverage!

I was taking a look at my all time stats since I started keeping track on letterbxd and there is an alarming trend!

Where is the diversity at? Only 3 POC and one lady! I got to get on that. Don’t even look at the directors… or do…

Jackie Chan is sticking out like a sore thumb here!

Anyway, I hope I don’t loose my Canadian Citizen ship for not enjoying Hard Core Logo!

January 2021’s Movie Watch List with Juicy Stats

Remember when it felt like it was taking forever for 2021 to arrive? And here we are already one month in!

There are a couple of changes I wanted to make from last year. One, is for the Juicy Stats. I’ll be keeping tabs the progress of a some yearly stats. So, there are some (hopefully) fun additions.

The second is how I watch films. I want to spend more time with the DVDs and Blu-rays in my collection and make better use of the streaming services. So, I made peace with the fact that my PVR will always be loaded with movies.

I think this worked out for the best as the following stats will show how I had a pretty good time…

Look at my boys in AC/DC blowing the competition out of the water! Chris Slade’s “performances” earned the top spot with his appearances in Live at Donington, Plug Me In, and Family Jewels. OK, seriously, this is a fun stat but it only uses the rating of the film, and not the performance as a the determining factor.

Baseball time!
These are the “batting stats” compiled for the FIRST TIME watches.  I give each movie a rating out of 5.  4.5 and up are home runs, 4s to 2.5s are hits, 2 and lower are field outs, an 0.5 (did not finish) is a Strike Out.  This tells me how well of a job I’m doing at picking which movies to watch.

Good Movie Average:  17/18 – .940 (Last month: .800)
Home Runs: 3 – Waitress, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Palm Springs
Strikeouts: 1, Dazed and Confused – I know this is a popular one, but it isn’t for me.

Awards
The Movie More People Should See:
Shattered Glass
Most Fun First Time Watch: The Butcher Boy
Most Fun Re-watch: All of the Bond and AC/DC concert films
Most Forgettable: Outland – I actually forgot that I had watched this movie before.
Better Than I Remembered: Dr. No
Not As Good As I Remembered:
The Muppet Movie
The movie I can finally cross off the Bucket-list: Kramer vs Kramer
Best performance: Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainy’s Bottom – Oscar nom, guaranteed. You heard it here first. But I’ll also give a strong shout out to John Carol Lynch who had a couple of great roles in The Trial of The Chicago 7 and The Founder.
Most Pleasant Surprise: Waitress
Most Disappointing Movie:  Wreck It Ralph

Worst Movie: Nothing deserves this award this month. Dazed and Confused, I couldn’t get into. Longshot Kids was watched with the intention of watching a bad movie, so I did its job.

Best Movie: Waitress

Top 6 Tips for Watching More Movies

After revealing in my post yesterday how I watched 445 movies in 2020… of course the questions “how” and “when” began.  “How did you do this?” and “When do you find the time?”

As Geoff Stevens would say: Verbalize the positive!

No one asked, “Why?”  I guess we all want to watch more movies!

I should also mention before I begin, a passion for movies is something that I share with my wife, Sarah.  Watching a flick has become our regular activity together.  I probably would watch as many as I do if I didn’t have someone to share them with.

So, I have some “pro-tips”.  Let me help you see more films…

#1. Make a list and SORT OF follow it.

too many netflix

How many evenings have you spent 30 minutes or more looking through Netflix trying to pick one?  If you chose one from the start you’d be 30 minutes in already.

This is my most important tip: Make a list.

Make it as long or short as you want.  10, 30, 50 movies.  Make the list random or specific.  Write them down, start a cue on Netflix, or get fancy with a spreadsheet.  Whatever works for you.

As long as you SORT OF follow it.  Following a list you made weeks or months ago when you are in the mood for something else is “un-fun”.  We are only here for fun.  Sometimes Sarah or I would want to see a horror flick or a black and white with Bogart.  We would not follow the list because it would conflict.   The list is ONLY there for when you can’t decided what to watch.  If we couldn’t decide within 5 minutes, I’d play the next movie on the list.  Indecisiveness, eliminated.

#2. Get out of the two hour mind set.

two hours later

Another way I squeezed more movies in is by not waiting until I had two consecutive hours of spare time to watch one.  If I had 30 minutes to an hour, I’d press play.  I’ll watch the rest when I have another chunk of free time.  Plus, most movies are shorter than two hours.  1hr 40min seems to be the average.  That’s shorter than two episodes of Game of Thrones or a hockey game… speaking of which…

#3. Watch less sports. Unless you really care about them…

football

While you spent Feb 2nd, 2020 watching the Superbowl, I watched Renee Zellweger in Judy.  It was pretty good.  Rene nailed it.  Did we miss the halftime show and fancy commercials?  Nope, they were all available online on Feb 3rd.

Stanley Cup playoffs? Tampa won the Cup on Sept 17th.  Sarah and I re-watched Election staring Mathew Broderick and Reese With Her Spoon.  It was way better than I remembered.

But I haven’t given up on sports entirely.  The Blue Jays are still important to me.  I mostly watch the Jays in 30 the day after the game that condenses it into a 30 minute show.  When The Jays made the playoffs this year, their run was short with many of the games in the afternoon.  So it hardly made a dent in movie watching.

If you can’t stay away from the games, cutting out the sports talk programs can free up some time.  Speaking of programs…

#4. Watch only the TV Programs you really care about.

tv show wars

Don’t cut anything you love, but perhaps you can trim a few things here and there.

  • Stay away from those 24 hour news channels that are designed to keep you watching.  Want to keep up to date with the world?  Pick a news program that will give you everything you need to know in 30 minutes or less and move on.
  • Are you “hate watching” a show?  You like the first few seasons, but the show took a turn and you are not into it anymore.  Free yourself from it.  You can read about or watch the finale whenever it comes if you need closure.
  • Maybe you don’t NEED to re-watch The Office again?  Seinfeld, yes.  Maybe not The Office.
  • Maybe pick one or two “Real Housewives” shows to watch instead of all 23.

#5.  Get accomplices who will force help you to watch movies.

bad movie club

I record a podcast once a month called Retro Filmdango with my friend Richard.  We watch three movies and talk about them.  Three movies a month added up to 36 in 2020 that I had to set some time aside to watch if I wanted to be part of the conversation.  Joining or starting a movie club is a great way to ensure you will make time for some film.

#6. Don’t wait to watch a movie with someone else.

cool bit

You’ll rarely get to a movie if you keep doing this.  Just watch it already.  If you like it, watch it again with your friend.  If you don’t, tell them how bad it is and you saved them from a crappy movie.  They’ll thank you for it.

So, those are my tips.  With this said, 445 movies was most likely a fluke for me.  2020 was a “perfect storm”, if you will.  With there being only Sarah and I here, the onus is always on us to do the traveling to visit of family and friends.  Both of our summer and holiday vacations were “Staycations” (Sorry, The Good Place!).  We are not busy parents.  We did no socializing in person.  No video game or vinyl conventions, no concerts, no restaurants.

Deke in the comments said it best:

we are in lockdown so WTF are we supposed to do! lol.

100%

So, you might not get to hundreds of movies in 2021 but maybe one or two of my tips will get you to more than less!  Happy watching!

2020’s Movie Watch List with Juicy Stats and The 2020 Marsy Movie Awards

Here is the BIG ONE!  The year end stats, then the awards show follows!   What is the best movie I have seen all year?  The question no one has been asking will be answered below!

A Couple of things to note before we dive in:

  • My rating’s system adjusted during the year.  So there are more 5s in the first half but I’m not going to adjust scores based on memory.
  • I decided to add movies I didn’t finish at the end of January.  So It looks like there is a rough patch to start, but that is just me adding them at the end of the month because I couldn’t remember which day I tried to watch them.

OK, Let’s see how much time I wasted enjoyed watching movies in 2020!

The List

  • An asterisk (*) indicates a first time viewing.
  • Strike-through means I didn’t enjoy it enough to finish it.

December 2020’s Movie Watch List with Juicy Stats

And there we have it!  A full year of doing these lists!  This happens so rarely for me, so I’m not sure but… I feel like I committed to doing something, then followed through with it.  Crazy to think of, eh?!?

I’ll work on the year end stats for tomorrow, but we still have one more month to wrap up before that!  So…

The List

  • An asterisk (*) indicates a first time viewing.
  • Strike-through means I didn’t enjoy it enough to finish it.
